Bassoonist, Dr. Jessica Wiley, is passionate about community outreach through solo, chamber, and orchestral music and has performed in small assorted instrumental groups in venues varying from school gyms to the Chateau Brandýs nad Labemand in Czech Republic.

With a knack for creating intimate connections with wide ranges of audiences through performances, Dr. Wiley has created concerts ranging in repertoire from Ravel's Mother Goose Suite to Villa-Lobos’ Ciranda das Sete Notas. She currently serves as the Symphony Education Manager for Utah Symphony | Utah Opera (USUO) and serves as a board member for the USUO Healthcare Night Committee. Known for installing passion for bassoon and learning in her students, she runs a bassoon studio in Salt Lake City and was Adjunct Professor of Bassoon for Snow College and Idaho State University for six years and one year, respectively.

Dr. Wiley has won several concerto competitions and soloed with The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, The University of Utah, and twice with Utah Valley University and Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Wiley placed first in the New York Fukes Chamber Competition and second in the Kansas Konrad Wolff-Ilse Bing Endowed Chamber Music Competition. Currently she serves as the substitute for Ballet West where she performs bassoon and contra bassoon.

Her research focuses on uplifting Black excellence, specifically in classical music. Her doctoral thesis, An Annotated Bibliography of Bassoon Solo and Chamber Music for up to Seven Players by African American Composers, is groundbreaking research that highlights and strengthens the diversity in classical music. Furthermore, Dr. Wiley has started an annual music therapy program in Entebee, Uganda, Africa in partnership with the Association of the Bladder Exstrophy Community helping bring community and belonging through the power of music to the children undergoing bladder exstrophy surgery.

Dr. Wiley earned her Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in bassoon performance from Utah Valley University studying bassoon performance with Brian Hicks, and received the award for “Outstanding Music Student of the Year;” Master of Music in bassoon performance from The University of Utah, under Lori Wike; Performance Studies Certificate in classical bassoon from Manhattan School of Music with tutelage from Dr. Frank Morelli; and Doctor of Musical Arts in bassoon performance with a minor in entrepreneurship under the instruction of Dr. Jennifer Rhodes.
